Growing up in the province, I got accustomed to having brownouts every now and then. When it happens at night, our default dinner would be sardines straight from the can topped with fresh tomatoes and onions. It is quick and easy process than cook food under the dark. When the power is out, time seems to slow down. I deem it as life forcing us to stop and take a rest, chat, and be connected without any distraction from the world. Candle-lit dinners and evenings filled with exchange of stories made “brownout memories” special to me. But when dim lights fill the house every night, it is a totally different story. It is the story of millions of Filipinos who do not have access to electricity.
Consequently, they rely on kerosene lamps or candles to lighten up their homes as the dawn approaches. I can just imagine how difficult and uncomfortable it is to live like this. That is why I’m grateful for movements who aim to help lighten up homes in a safer and affordable manner. One of them is One Million Lights Philippines.
I reached out to One Million Lights Philippines and upon receiving the assistance I needed, I launched my passion project entitled “Light Up A Life” in celebration of my 28th birthday. This project took off because of the family and friends who shared the same vision and who are more than willing to share their blessings to reach 100 families in Isabela.
D.LIGHT solar lamps were distributed on Nov 25, 2016 at San Pablo Community Center, San Pablo, Alicia, Isabela.
I would like to thank everyone who supported this illuminating project - One Million Lights Philippines, Power 4 All, ASKI Alicia Branch, and my co-donors. It was made possible because of your partnership. Thank you!
When there is a light, there is a changed life. Couldn’t help but remember the passage that inspired me to push through with this project, “For it is You who light my lamp; the Lord my God lightens my darkness.” Psalm 18:27
Indeed, it is only Jesus who can bring the true enlightenment and change we need in our lives. May we all come to know and take hold of this Light every day, in every season. Merry Christmas!
